Hélène darroze at the connaught menu

An excellent start. Then things began to go downhill. The potato and cheese raviolo was, to say the least, stodgy and should never have been served, the confit bacalao showed little sign of having been confit, and neither the watercress mousse nor the poultry jus added anything. Definitely ho-hum. My wife preferred the John Dory for her mains which was served in such a generous portion that it dominated the plate almost unrelieved visually by the smear of parsley jus and the minuscule amounts of other ingredients which were virtually impossible to judge for their quality. I had the roast loin of Ibérico pork, which from the point of view of taste, tenderness and texture was sensational. Just a pity that it came barely warm. I mentioned this to the charming and efficient serveuse, who duly reported to the excellent restaurant manager, who in turn apologised profusely and organised a glass of sweet wine with our dessert.

However, slightly later, we noticed that the couple on the table adjacent to us had also had the pork, but sliced rather than in one generous block as I had had, and, unbelievably, it turned out not to be tender at all. Our surmise was that mine had been on the cool side because we were not eating quickly enough for kitchen, and that theirs had been sliced and heated for too long to ensure that it arrived on the table at the correct temperature. We might be completely mistaken but this was how it appeared to us. The dessert was not what was printed on the "personalised" copies of the menu very kindly presented to us at the end of the meal, but the super lime "mousse" in a chocolate and hazelnut case showed that there were good things to be had here, and it went blissfully with the lovely Passito di Pantelleria we were offered. Good coffee followed. Were we expecting too much from lunch at a two-star restaurant? After our recent, excellent, lunch experience at Pollen Street Social, where Jason Atherton was in the kitchen, we certainly do not think so, which basically means that this turned out to be a distinct letdown and far from good value for money.

The oyster with caviar, the homard, cheese, great wine Yes it's expensive more than £ for 2 but it's worth every penny Only very small caveat was that the restaurant was relatively empty when we visited on a Wednesday evening. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch. From coming in to going out everything was absolutely spot on. The set lunch menu including wines was first class. Not really much more to say.
